Root & Return Compost Co.

Return to the Soil. Grow Something Better.

Simple, local compost pickup that turns your food waste into nutrient-rich soil. Reducing landfill impact and supporting healthier gardens in our community.

Serving Helena and surrounding communities

Composting Made Simple

A white two-story house with black trim and a red front door, lit from inside, surrounded by greenery, with trees and a cloudy sky at dusk.

Root & Return Compost Co. offers residential compost pickup designed to fit seamlessly into your routine.

Instead of sending food scraps to the landfill, we collect them and transform them into nutrient-rich compost; that nourishes local soil and reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers.

You don’t need land, time, or experience. Just a container and a commitment to return what you can.

How It Works

  • Choose a plan that fits your household.

  • add food scraps like fruit, vegetables, coffee grounds, eggshells, and more.

  • We pick up your bucket on a regular schedule. (bucket is weighed and replaced with a clean bucket)

  • Your scraps are transformed into compost that supports local gardens and soil health. You get back finished compost biannually.

In Landfills, food waste breaks down without oxygen which produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
In the soil, that same material becomes something life-giving.
Composting is a simple shift with a powerful impact. It reduces waste, supports sustainable growing practices, and reconnects us to the natural cycle of breakdown and renewal.
What we return to the earth matters.

More than Waste

Household Waste

The Average person wastes 238 lbs of food per year. How many people are in your household?

Food in a landfill

Did you Know that a head of lettuce in a landfill can last up to 25 years?

A landfill or dump filled with trash and debris, with tires in the foreground and dark clouds in the sky.

Landfill

Uneaten food is the single largest component of municipal solid waste taking up almost 25% of our nations landfills.

Methane

In landfills food gradually breaks down to form methane, a greenhouse gas that is up to 86 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.

Luckily we offer solutions for all organic residuals, helping you divert scraps to compost
